Frequently Asked Questions
Is your hall available for rental functions?
It sure is, and you can view our rental brochure page here. (Click Here)
What are your Membership requirements?
We welcome new members; both firefighters and administrative help is always needed. Quite simply, you have to be a resident of South Park Township, work in the township or live in a municipality that borders South Park Township. We also have a Junior Membership program for anyone between the ages 16-18 yrs. You can get in touch with our Membership Chairman for more details or for answers to any other questions you may have about joining our organization.
How is your Fire Department organized?
Our fire department is comprised of two organization structures. For firefighting, we have a Fire Chief, two Assistant Fire Chiefs, three Captains and four Lieutenants. Our apparatus maintenance is overseen by a Chief Engineer and two Assistant Engineers.
Administratively, the department as a whole is governed by a Board of Directors led by a President, Vice President and Financial Secretary. A Recording Secretary keeps a record of all meetings held by the department.
We also have a Relief Association whose statutory purpose is to administer benefits to members who were injured in the line of duty and to purchase safety equipment to prevent line of duty injuries.
Are you a non-profit organization?
We have been officially recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501c3 Non-Profit, Tax Exempt Organization.
Can my Boy scout/Girl scout troop come visit your fire department?
Absolutely! All we ask is that you make those arrangements with our Fire Prevention Officer, Paul Kelly whose pager number is: 412-590-9668 or our Fire Chief, Dennis M. McDonough by calling the station at: 412-655-4844.
How much of my tax dollars go to Broughton?
We are constantly raising funds for operating expenses and equipment replacement in order to keep your tax burden to a minimum. In 2004, South Park Township graciously agreed to provide the department $5,000 to partially cover the cost of purchasing Personal Protective Equipment which protects our firefighters.
The township also provides: fuel, vehicle and building insurance, a portion of an accidental death benefit insurance policy, workers compensation insurance and a great working relationship!
Who does your fund raising?
That's an easy question to answer: Broughton Volunteer Fire Department members perform 100% of the fund raising activities for the organization.
When does your Department Train/Drill?
Our drills are on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Tuesday nights of each month from 7pm till 10pm. Some on what we drill on are hose line advancements, vehicle rescue, ventilation, and much much more. These drills are made up from the BVFD Training Committee and the Fire Chief. We are always ready to expand our experience/skills, because our #1 Priority is our safety and the safety of the South Park Twp. Residence.
