The mission of Broughton Volunteer Fire Department has always been a simple one. Provide the community of South Park Township with the best trained, best equipped, 100% volunteer fire department that can be assembled with little financial burden to the community.
The members of Broughton Volunteer Fire Department are proud. Proud not only of the organization they serve, but proud of the township they protect.
Broughton Volunteer Fire Department is located in South Park Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. We are at the southern end of Allegheny County and border Washington County. Located approximately 11 miles south of Pittsburgh, today, South Park Township is a growing, mostly residential community contained within 10 square miles and formerly comprised of sprawling farms and coal mines.
A portion of our Township is made up of the recreational facility of Allegheny County known as South Park. This 2,000 acre park plays host to many recreational amenities such as golfing (two courses), walking trails, many baseball fields, running track, a game preserve featuring several live buffalo, a wave pool, BMX track, ice skating rink and much, much more. Until recently, the park's Fairgrounds played host to the annual Allegheny County Fair.
In 1966, the name South Park Township was established to closer identify the township with the county park. Prior to then, the municipality was known as Snowden Township.
Broughton Volunteer Fire Department is 100% volunteer. No members are paid for any services they perform. We devote hundreds of hours each year through training to make sure we are doing our best to protect our most valuable asset: the residents of South Park Township and hundreds more hours working on our financial independence.
Today, Broughton is fortunate to have within its membership, three Pennsylvania Certified Fire Suppression Instructors. Very few 100% volunteer fire departments are able to make this claim and it is a testament to the level of dedication that our members exhibit to themselves, this organization and the citizens we protect: SOUTH PARK TOWNSHIP.
